How to Calculate Plastic Bag Weight and Cost per 1,000 Bags

Plastic bag weight formula in metric units

For a simple flat bag made from two film walls, use the following estimate:

Estimated weight per bag (g) = Width (cm) × Length (cm) × 2 × Thickness (microns) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 10,000

Because 1,000 grams equals 1 kilogram, the same numerical result also represents kilograms per 1,000 bags:

Worked example: weight of 1,000 PE bags

Assume a buyer needs a flat polyethylene bag with these preliminary specifications:

  • Width: 40 cm
  • Length: 60 cm
  • Per-wall thickness: 50 microns
  • Planning density: 0.92 g/cm³

Apply the formula:

40 × 60 × 2 × 50 × 0.92 ÷ 10,000 = 22.08

The estimated result is 22.08 grams per bag, or 22.08 kilograms per 1,000 bags. An order of 100,000 bags would therefore contain approximately 2,208 kilograms of film before adjustments for the actual construction, process variation, and packaging components.

This example uses a planning density only. Ask the supplier to calculate with the density of the proposed material or blend. Polyethylene grades occupy different density ranges; for example, ASTM D3981 defines a density range for medium-density polyethylene film and also covers dimensional tolerances and physical properties. Your order may use another PE grade or a custom blend.

How thickness changes bag weight

When width, length, and density stay the same, bag weight changes in direct proportion to thickness. Increasing thickness from 40 to 50 microns increases estimated material weight by 25 percent. Reducing thickness from 50 to 45 microns reduces the theoretical film weight by 10 percent.

Adjustments for gussets, flaps, handles and seals

The basic formula describes a rectangular two-wall flat bag. More complex bags require the actual film area used in production.

Side-gusseted and bottom-gusseted bags

Include the additional film opened by the gusset. Suppliers may describe gusset dimensions in different ways, so confirm whether the quoted width is face width, total lay-flat width, or face width plus gusset. Ask the supplier to show the film-width calculation on the specification sheet.

Flaps, lips and adhesive closures

Add the film length required for the flap or extended lip. Adhesive tape, release liner, zipper profiles, drawstrings, and other closures add weight that is not represented by the flat-film formula.

Handle bags and perforated bags

A die-cut handle removes a small amount of film, while a reinforced patch adds material. T-shirt handles change the bag outline and cannot be estimated accurately as a full rectangle. Perforations and vent holes also remove material but may affect strength more than total weight.

Printing and additives

Ink, masterbatch, slip additives, anti-static additives, UV stabilizers, and recycled content influence the final formulation and sometimes the measured density. For accurate production planning, use the supplier's finished sample weight rather than relying only on a theoretical resin calculation.

How to estimate cost per 1,000 plastic bags

Material weight is a major input, but a complete bag quotation includes more than resin. A practical commercial model is:

Cost per 1,000 bags = Material cost + Conversion cost + Printing cost + Components + Packing + Quality requirements + Commercial and logistics costs

Material cost can be estimated from kilograms per 1,000 bags multiplied by the agreed material basis. Conversion covers film blowing, cutting, sealing, perforating, and bag making. Printing depends on color count, coverage, plate or cylinder requirements, artwork changes, and order quantity. Zippers, adhesive strips, drawstrings, handles, labels, and special cartons should be listed separately.

Do not use an online resin price as the only basis for challenging a quotation.   2. Material or blend, including recycled-content percentage if relevant;
  3. Thickness tolerance and measurement method;
  4. Finished dimension tolerance;
  5. Seal, handle, closure, and perforation construction;
  6. Printing colors, coverage, and artwork setup;

If one quote is substantially lighter, investigate before assuming it is more efficient.
